Little Busters is a unique visual novel because of the minor changes seen every time you play a new route. In particular, Rin Natsume is the ever-changing star heroine who develops drastically with each playthrough. During your first time playing the game, Rin is plagued by crippling shyness and has a hard time interacting with those outside her immediate group of childhood friends. By the end, she's got enough confidence to hang out with classmates and the strength to stand on her own.
As such, it's important that I start this application by stressing that IT CONTAINS SPOILERS. Everywhere. Rin's character cannot be fully explored without spoiling the entire game, because she is a major point in the game. With the new Anime coming up, I highly advise anyone not already familiar with the canon to turn a blind eye to this application unless you want the Secrets of the World spoiled for you. I am writing this particular application for Rin Natsume as she is during the very first playthroughs of the game.

One of Rin's most defining characteristics is her shyness, though it may not be the first trait an onlooker picks up on. That is because it is something that Rin doesn't often get a chance to show. At the start of the series, Rin stays within her comfort zone; within the Little Busters. Her childhood friends are the only friends she needs and she is very comfortable with them, sharing her blunt thoughts and drop kicking the boys when they upset her. So to someone looking on from afar, Rin isn't a shy person. But it only seems that way, since Rin isn't attempting to interact with other people. She has no interest in others; she doesn't even know the name of the girl sitting behind her, nor can be recognize many of her classmates or dormmates.
When put into an unfamiliar social situation, Rin's first instinct is to hide behind her friends. Typically, this is Riki. She clams up and cannot talk; her usual confident and arrogant nature are replaced with shy mumbles that she can barely process into full words, even with a lot of effort. If she has any hope of carrying on a normal conversation, Rin does so with an insulting air of arrogance that Riki (the protagonist) observes as being Rin's way of getting over her social anxiety.
Rin's social anxiety has a few patterns that can be observed during the first playthrough. For one, she seems more comfortable with adults and boys than with girls her age. Rin is able to calmly interact with a cafeteria staff member, for example, but when her tiny classmate Komari tries to talk to her she clams up and hides. Similarly, Rin is able to carry on a conversation with a boy she has not ever met before, but cannot even talk normally to her former room mate. Rin is the only girl in a group of boys, whom she grew up with, so it might perhaps make sense why she is more comfortable with boys than girls. She has more experience dealing with them.
Riki also observes that Rin is not good at handling very friendly people. Komari is very kind, warm, and welcoming, but this frightens Rin. On the other hand, Sasami is an annoying ojousama that Rin constantly fights with, and Rin actually seems to get along with her in her own... Rin-sort of way.
Luckily, her social anxiety is something Rin is shown to conquer. She becomes better at interacting with others as the story progresses, but it is still a slow process. As mentioned, she seems able to cope with Sasami after numerous run-ins and players might note how Rin's social interactions gradually become more confident with each playthrough. A prime example is when Kyousuke turns off the communication to Rin's headset, trying to force Rin to interact with other girls without her friends guiding her through their radio system. In the first playthrough, this causes Rin to turn around and run back to the boys, but in later playthroughs she continues the mission on her own.
Another quirk of Rin's social interactions is how childish she is. At the start, Rin does not know a good social decision from a bad one. She says stupid things, insults people, and gets herself into a lot of awkward trouble because she cannot tell joking advice from real advice. Riki calls her childish and innocent. Rin rarely interacts outside of her social group, so she doesn't know how to do so. This is why the earlier mentioned radio system was in place; the Little Busters could hear Rin's interactions and give her advice on what to say and do.
Similarly, Rin usually follows a friend around and lets them do the talking for her.
But there is more to Rin than being shy. Another quirk that might be noted is her somewhat tomboyish personality. She is quick to anger and quick to resort to violence. Rin kicks Masato a lot (A LOT) when he upsets her and insults the boys freely and casually. In the company of the Little Busters, Rin is just like the other boys; just as crazy, violent, and goofy.
She also retains her own childish... specialness. Rin has fun going along with even the silliest ideas. When they communicate over the radio, Rin is delighted to end her sentences with "over". When Haruka gives Rin a tambourine, the boys hear Rin cheerfully murmuring "SHAKA SHAKA HEY~" to herself while she plays with it. Simple things like this amuse Rin, though she doesn't want that publicly exposed (even though it often is).
This is because Rin seems to have a self image that she wants to maintain. She wants to seem tougher than she actually is. This causes her to get flustered and act a bit mean whenever Riki catches her spoiling her cats, for example, and get embarrassed when she cannot stop herself from saying "over" at the end of sentences. This tough image helps Rin glaze over unexpected social interactions, because she feels tough enough to overcome them.
She's actually a very kind girl. Despite wanting to hide it sometimes, Rin is very kind and loving. She takes care of numerous stray cats and is so loved by them that they follow her around, even in school. Rin was having trouble calling Komari by her first name, but the moment Komari fell down and injured herself she called "Komari-chan are you okay?!" without a second thought. Though she hates social interactions, Rin helped Riki move desks with Haruka because she worried Haruka would get hurt during it alone.
Rin's kindness pushes the game forward.
